Welcome to the first issue of the Constraint Programming Newsletter for 2015.

Reminder: You have to renew your membership if you want to remain a member of the ACP. Not a member yet? It's easy to sign up!

In this issue we can announce a new initiative of the ACP and the Constraints journal, publishing annual collections of thesis abstracts. Furthermore, we have the third article in our series on classic papers with impact.

As always, we're happy to receive contributions to the newsletter, and you can now send them to newsletter@a4cp.org.

NEWS

Here are the topics from the Q4 2014 ACP Executive Committee Report, available at

Constraints journal: Now publishing thesis abstracts

The ACP and the Constraints journal are starting a new initiative to promote PhD thesis work in the area of constraints.

As part of the ACP thesis archive, we will collect abstracts of PhD theses that present research on constraints. Once a year, the collected abstracts will appear in the Constraints journal. As a service to the community, the Constraints journal will make the abstracts available to all readers.

The first review article will appear in the October issue of Constraints. We will consider submissions of theses from the previous three years (i.e., you must have graduated on or after 1 January 2012). The deadline for submitting a thesis to be included in the October issue is 30 June 2015. All you need to do is to submit your thesis to the ACP archive and tick the box Include in upcoming Constraints review article.

Submissions must be at most 3700 characters long (including spaces), and will be reviewed for correctness and completeness of the information by Guido Tack and Chris Mears. Abstracts will be published if the thesis itself (or significant parts of it) would be considered on-topic for the Constraints journal.

Papers with impact

This time, Jean-François Puget looks back at a 1988 paper that got him started in the field of constraint programming. Enjoy!

What is the paper that got you excited about CP? Let us know if you'd like to contribute to this series!
